Lucca: a piece of history
Lucca was founded by the Etruscans. The name comes from the Etruscan word for swamp. At that time, the city was situated in a marshy area, making it a very fitting name. In 180 BC, the city came under Roman rule as a Roman colony. Due to its location at the crossroads of three major roads, the city held an important position.
Silk trade
Lucca grew wealthy primarily through the silk trade, which emerged in the 11th century. This made the city a competitor to Byzantium. As the capital of the Margraviate of Tuscany, it was already more or less independent at that time, but true independence came with the charter of 1160. Through this treaty, Lucca became an independent republic. It remained so for nearly 700 years.
After being ruled successively by the French, Bourbons, and Sardinians, Lucca definitively joined the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. It has become a very popular place among tourists.
