Piedmont

It is one of the most popular destinations for a holiday in Italy: the lake district in the north of the boot. From famous lakes like Lake Como, Lake Garda, and Lake Maggiore to smaller gems like Lake Iseo, there is something for everyone. Whether you enjoy water sports, hiking, charming villages, or delicious food. Once you have tasted a touch of la dolce vita at the lakes, you won't want anything else.
It is precisely for that reason that many celebrities have a house on one of the lakes. A walk along the shores, an aperitivo on one of the cozy terraces, or a boat trip, and you are instantly on vacation!
The lakes offer plenty of opportunities for those who enjoy swimming, but there are also countless other water sports options: sailing, surfing, water skiing, pedal boating, canoeing… In some places, you can even go stand-up paddleboarding. Prefer a more relaxed holiday? The towns surrounding the lakes are perfect for a leisurely stroll, with plenty of time for a nice long lunch, a bit of shopping, people-watching, and enjoying a glass of wine or Aperol Spritz on a terrace.
In the vicinity of the lakes lie the most stunning cities. First and foremost, of course, Milan, a paradise for shopping enthusiasts as well as for those who enjoy a day of culture. Climb to the roof of the imposing Duomo, follow in the footsteps of Leonardo Da Vinci (from his Last Supper in the Santa Maria delle Grazie monastery to his inventions in a museum dedicated specifically to this genius), or take a ride on the historic tram. Sports enthusiasts can visit the San Siro stadium or explore Milan by bike. A beautiful route leads along the Navigli, one of the city's trendiest neighborhoods, to a stunning green nature reserve.
Prefer a slightly smaller city? Monza, Bergamo, and Brescia are also well worth a visit. From Lake Garda, Mantua, Padua, and Verona are also highly recommended – and even a day trip to Venice is an option.
A day at a water park is a huge hit with the children. Especially around Lake Garda, you can indulge in an abundance of attractions. Something else children enjoy is a bike ride along the lake. Work is underway on a brand-new bike path, but until that is fully completed, you can already enjoy a nice ride from Peschiera del Garda to Borghetto sul Mincio, a picturesque village with an old watermill and lovely terraces for a refreshing drink.
Lake Como measures nearly 150 square kilometers, but thanks to its unique shape, you never get the feeling that you are standing by an endless expanse of water. The mountains are almost always in sight, a magnificent panorama that none other than George Clooney regularly enjoys. He has a house on Lake Como, so you might spot him walking or sipping a glass of wine.
The largest city on the shores of the lake is Como, after which the lake is named. The towns of Menaggio, Varenna, Bellagio, Lecco, and Cernobbio are also pleasantly lively. While touring the area, you will discover the most beautiful vistas. A scenic route takes you from Menaggio to Argegno. Also visit Isola Comacina, an island accessible from Ossuccio. Other tips regarding Lake Como include the famous Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, the gardens of Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, the historic town of Mezzegra with Villa Tremezzina, and Villa Balbianello in Lenno, which appears in the James Bond film Casino Royal.
Lake Maggiore is, as the name suggests, nice and big. It is no less than 60 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide. Although the lake lies largely on Italian territory, a small section peeks across the Swiss border.
Take a scenic tour of the most beautiful places on the lake, not by car but by ferry. Let yourself be surprised by the charm of Verbania, Luino, Stresa, and Arona, among others. Be sure to add the Parco della Villa Pallavicini in Stresa to your list as well, for its beautiful botanical gardens featuring various animals. Even more special is a visit to the Borromean Islands, located in the middle of the lake: Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola dei Pescatori. Isola Bella is particularly famous for its truly beautiful terraced garden, but do not skip the small Isola dei Pescatori either. Many families live here who make a living from fishing – and consequently, the menus of the island's restaurants feature the most delicious fish dishes.
Lake Iseo is somewhat smaller and less well-known than its bigger brother, Lake Como, but that also means it is not yet as crowded. Even in the high season, it is a pleasant place to be, with plenty of space for everyone, both in and around the water.
After a day of fun on the water, taste a glass of Franciacorta, the Italian sister of French champagne. This sparkling wine is produced only in the wine region of the same name, which borders Lake Iseo. Beautiful for a test drive too!
Lake Lugano lies between Lake Maggiore and Lake Como. Part of it lies in Switzerland, with the Alps as an impressive backdrop. It is wonderful to stroll along the promenade here, after which you can sit down for a meal in one of the restaurants in charming Porlezza. A special day out is a visit to the mountain villages of Monte Brè and San Salvatore. Another recommendation: the hiking route from Castagnola to Gandria, passing among olive trees that are quite rare so far north.
To the west of Lake Garda lies Lago d'Idro, Lake Idro – one of the cleanest lakes in all of Italy! Thanks to the river Cheise, the lake is constantly filled with lovely fresh and clear water, in which you can enjoy swimming and playing, but which is also a favorite spot for many surfers.
