Puglia

As the name actually suggests, the Piedmont region lies at the foot of the mountains. You will find the region in the northwest of Italy, at the foot of the Alps, which you can admire from a large part of the region. Even from the capital, Turin, you can see the mountain range shimmering on the horizon.
The capital of Piedmont is Turin, once the very first capital of Italy and the headquarters of Fiat. It is a delightful city, both for a day trip and a city break, with an atmosphere somewhat reminiscent of Paris, with northern grandeur.
Visit the film museum in the Mole Antonelliana, the city's iconic symbol; be enchanted by the treasures of the Egyptian Museum (with the largest collection of Egyptian mummies and jewelry outside of Egypt); and view the famous Shroud of Turin. Fill your suitcase with delicacies at the culinary paradise Eataly, located at the former Fiat factory; order a bicerin (a drink of coffee, chocolate, and cream); and enjoy the regal atmosphere in the city streets.
In Italy, Piedmont is known as 'il paradiso dei buongustai' – 'the paradise for gourmets'. When you taste the chocolate from Turin, the famous wines such as Barolo, Barbera, and Barbaresco, or the fragrant truffles from Alba and the surrounding area, you know why the region deserves this name!
As a wine lover, you will also visit Barolo, a charming town with a wine museum, a corkscrew museum, and, of course, many wine bars where you can taste. In the surrounding area, too, you can indulge in delicious wines with resounding names such as Barbaresco, Barbera, and Nebbiolo. The vineyards of the Langhe e Roero, in the southwest of Piedmont, are even on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides wine, you will find an abundance of truffles and hazelnuts here. Alba is the capital of the white truffle, which honors this precious product every autumn with a grand truffle fair.
You can also eat your fill in Bra. The Slow Food movement originated here in 1986, in the courtyard of Osteria Boccondivino, where you can still sit down for flavorful dishes.
Piedmont not only has mountains and delicious food and drink; in the region you will also find a number of the most famous lakes in Italy, such as the Lake Maggiore (which is also partly located in Lombardy), featuring Isola Bella, with a magnificent garden and terraces. Isola dei Pescatori is also highly recommended, especially for a delicious lunch with fresh fish. Less well-known, but at least as beautiful, is Lake Orta. In the lake lies Isola San Giulio, a picturesque spot that you can reach from Orta San Giulio by ferry.
After all that eating and drinking, you can also enjoy hiking or cycling in Piedmont. The region has many nature reserves, such as Val Grande National Park. Skiing is also possible in Piedmont, including at Sestriere, the site of the 2006 Winter Olympics, just outside Turin.
