Tuscany Wine Route: Maremma, wine from picturesque vineyards

Sea, mountains, hills and mild winters – the Maremma It has an excellent climate for wine production. It is no coincidence that some of the wines made here bear the DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), or IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) label, signifying their protected origin. But what exactly should you choose during a holiday in Tuscany? We have already listed the various wines from this region for you, for a varied Tuscany wine route through the Maremma.

Two excellent wines come from the area around Volterra: a red based on Sangiovese and a white based on Trebbiano, Malvasia, and Vermentino. These wines have held DOC status since 1977. There are only thirteen producers of these special wines.

A red wine from the hills of Scansano. It is made largely from the Sangiovese grape, which is called Morellino here. The wine has held DOCG status since 2007. Notably, this wine does not need to age in barrels and can therefore be enjoyed just eight months after the grape harvest.

The area around Orbetello produces mainly white wines, as well as red and rosé. Here too, Trebbiano and Sangiovese are the principal grape varieties, along with the local Ansonica. It is a small wine region with about twenty producers.

One of the most famous wines from Bolgheri. Its history dates back to the 20s, when Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta wanted to try to rival the wines of Bordeaux. Sassicaia was the result, made from 85 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 percent Cabernet Franc. A powerful wine, for which you will easily pay around two hundred euros.
