Getting married in Tuscany; everything you need to know

This can involve either a ceremonial wedding, where a local civil registrar will officiate your marriage, or a romantic symbolic ceremony, where you are already legally married in the Netherlands. Important for your wedding in Tuscany

For all information regarding the wedding ceremony as well as further formalities, you can contact the Italian municipality where the wedding will take place, or Tritt if the ceremony takes place at one of our wedding venues (booking a date, witnesses (max. 1 witness per partner), optional interpreter, photographer, flowers, program of the day including dinner, etc.). In Tuscany, a civil marriage (i.e., a legal marriage) can only be performed at locations designated by the municipality. A symbolic wedding can take place at any desired location.

Necessary documents

To marry in Tuscany, Italy as a Dutch national residing in the Netherlands, the following recent (not older than six months), original documents must be submitted:

Birth certificate (multilingual model, stating the names of the parents).
Certificate of eligibility to marry (multilingual model) from the Dutch municipality where you are registered.
It is not necessary to submit a “nulla osta” drawn up by one of the Dutch representations in Italy. This is unknown to some Italian municipalities.

Points to consider when you want to get married in Tuscany or elsewhere in Italy

Italian law states that women who have been previously married may only remarry 300 days after the final divorce decree.
If you were born in a country other than the Netherlands, you will need to check whether a birth certificate issued by that country is accepted without further ado.
Marriage registration not necessary for a marriage in Italy between two Dutch nationals who do not live in Italy;
A marriage legally concluded in Italy and recorded in an Italian deed is recognized in the Netherlands.
As in the Netherlands, in Italy one can choose between a marriage in community of property (“la comunione dei beni”) or under a prenuptial agreement (“la separazione dei beni”).
It is not necessary to notify the embassy in Rome or the consulate-general in Milan of your intention to marry in Italy.
Since 1 January 2012, it is no longer possible to get married at a Dutch embassy abroad.

Do not forget

Always consult the conditions to be allowed to marry in Italy, due to changes in rules and conditions.
Contact the municipality where you are registered to obtain a birth certificate and a certificate of marriage eligibility.
Print a Consular declaration in color.
In the case of a marriage in community of property, have the terms and conditions drawn up by a Dutch notary.
